9. Cybernetic, Machine Learning and Intelligent System Applications in Thailand |
(PDF) |
| Description: |
Research in the areas of machine learning, cybernetics and intelligent systems are gaining momentum in Thailand, and development of applications for practical problems have become a key focus in many Thai universities. For example, Thai language poses many challenges in the processing and recognition of handwritten documents and spoken speeches in Thai. Another area of research is due to the complexity and potential security issues associated with modern telecommunication and networking systems, this calls for ML and intelligent techniques to offer appropriate solutions. One more example is the need to incorporate intelligent techniques to assist in the management of education institutes, due to the large number of enrolments and diverse backgrounds of the students. This special session invites authors from Thailand and the neighbouring regions to showcase, disseminate and share their research findings in these disciplines and problem domains.

10. Intelligent Knowledge Discovery and Its Applications |
(PDF) |
| Description: |
Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDD) technologies have attracted the attention of researchers from different disciplines since late 1980s. Generally speaking, the major concern of KDD includes data preprocessing, data extraction, data mining, and data evaluation. All of these may affect the end result of KDD, especially when the so-called big data is concerned. For this reason, how to handle such a large amount of data, how to find information hidden in the data, and how to display the end results have become three important issues. Recently, several soft computing technologies are used in this research domain, such as neural network, fuzzy, simulated annealing, tabu search, evolutionary computing, and swarm intelligence. This special session will focus on using soft computing to solve KDD problems. In addition, we also welcome researches on mining technologies for cloud computing, big data, internet of things (IoT), and other kinds of intelligent systems. Authors are encouraged to submit both theoretical and practical articles to this special session.

11. Integration of Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches for Decision Making Under Uncertainty and Incompleteness |
(PDF) |
| Description: |
Quantitative (also data-driven) and qualitative (also domain knowledge driven) techniques have been widely used in decision making, and they are still hot research topics due to their importance and effectiveness in addressing uncertainty and incompleteness. This invited special session will be focused on integration of both techniques for different decision making problems under uncertainty and incompleteness, and will aim at providing an opportunity for collecting some excellent work on the above common research areas including the state-of-the-art science and technologies, clarify the rationality and applicability of the approaches and their applications, review accomplishments, assess future directions, and share new ideas, original research results and practical experiences.
Accordingly, we would like to invite you to submit your contribution within the following three research domains, which can be theoretical formalisms, calculi and methodologies; algorithms investigation or practical applications:1)Contribution on development of algorithms and systems for modeling, designing, fusing and applying both qualitative and quantitative models to handle multiple and heterogonous information for decision making purpose. The approaches could be either numerical or symbolic, or both, could be based on probability theory, fuzzy/possibility theory, belief function theory, and different varieties of logic based approaches (classical logics or non-classical logics). 2)Contribution on investigating, reviewing and assessing the principles, explanation, and strategies on how humans represent and use incomplete and uncertain data and knowledge from a cognitive science perspective; 3)Contribution on practical applications of the integration of both quantitative and qualitative formalisms and modelling approaches in science, engineering, business and education. We especially welcome submissions of papers with the focus on applications.

12. Advances in Distributed Evolutionary Computation and Its Applications |
(PDF) |
| Description: |
Evolutionary computation (EC) algorithms include evolutionary algorithm, ant colony ptimization, particle swarm optimization, differential evolution, etc. They have been successfully applied in solving optimization problems in various areas, such as manufacturing, communication networks, transportation, economy, and bioinformatics, etc. However, many real world problems involve complex variable relationships and large scale of data. The computation time and efficiency issues in solving these complex and large-scale optimization problems are bottleneck restricting the development of the EC algorithms. Parallel and distributed realization of the EC algorithms is a promising way to tackle these issues. Furthermore, cloud computing is also a hot research field in distributed computing techniques and it can be adopted in enhancing the performance of EC algorithms. This session aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners to promote novel research works in distributed EC algorithms and their applications.

15. Activity Recognition |
(PDF) |
| Description: |
Activity recognition aims to infer the activities performed by individuals so as to understand the individuals’ behaviours. Activity recognition consists of three core tasks, namely, activity sensing, activity modelling and activity inference. During activity sensing the user’s behaviour and their situated environments are monitored through multiple multi-modal sensors, e.g. video cameras or various types of wearable and miniaturised sensors. Activity sensing generates data streams. Activity modelling creates computational models of activities that can be used to support the analysis of activity data streams. Activity inference is to process activity data streams against computational models of activities to derive the ongoing activity. There are a number of approaches and methods which can be used for activity inference, for example, data mining and machine learning based methods like HMM and DBN, or knowledge based approaches like logical and ontological reasoning, Decision Tree. Activity inference is normally closely related to the activity models. Activity recognition can be utilized in various applications, e.g., assisted living, healthcare and smart hospitals, security and surveillance, sports performance monitoring, behaviour biometrics, etc. This special session on activity recognition provides a forum for researchers from both industry and academia to exchange ideas on various aspects of activity recognition. The session will run as a special parallel track of the main conference at ICMLC’13, which will be held on 14-17th July, 2013 in Tianjin, China. Papers will be subject to the regular conference reviewing procedure, and accepted papers will be part of the regular conference proceedings and indexed by IEEE Xplore.

16. Pattern Recognition |
(PDF) |
| Description: |
Pattern recognition algorithms generally aim to classify some special objects. These objects are related to application areas, they may be images, signals, videos and other any measurable and needed classification objects. Thus pattern recognition is studied in many fields, including computer vision, biometrics, data mining, knowledge discovery, traffic flow, computer-aided diagnosis and so on. This special session mainly included two general topics: feature extraction and clustering, which are two crucial algorithms relative to pattern recognition. Feature selection algorithms attempt to directly prune out redundant or irrelevant features. Clustering algorithms attempt to predict categorical labels under unsupervised learning. In this session, we will discuss these algorithms with several specific applications: object tracking, medical text classification, face recognition and computer-aided diagnosis.
